CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity)

About the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

The CBD is a convention prepared to protect biodiversity on Earth. It was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992, based on a global consensus on the need to converse biodiversity. It came into effect on December 29, 1993, and 197 countries have ratified the convention.

The CBD is one of the world’s three major environmental conventions, along with the Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification adopted in Paris, France in 1994.
