The Convention on Biological Diversity, which entered into force in 1993, reaffirmed that each nation has sovereign rights to its bio-resources. In order to ensure fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources, which was the third purpose outlined in the Convention on Biological Diversity, the signatories engaged in active discussion and as a result adopted the Nagoya Protocol in 2010.
