MABIK

80% of the Earth’s organisms inhabit the seas and oceans, we only know 1% of them. MABIK is conducting research to learn more about the other 99%.

Conservation

For conservation and sustainable use of marine bio-resources, mid- and long-term plans are formulated and updated and monitored on a regular basis by MABIK.

Conservation
Restoration/Proliferation Collection
  • Pursuing restoration and proliferation of endangered species
  • Collecting industrially useful species for mass proliferation
the Marine Ecosystem Conservation
  • Protecting marine life and habitats
  • Taking scientific measures to keep the ecosystem healthy
Marine Life Rescue/Relief
  • Rescuing and releasingmarine life affected by disasters
  • Protecting marine life from illegal or incidental capture
Species and LMOs Measures Against Introduced
  • Managing living modified organisms (LMOs)
  • Managing introduced species that threaten indigenous species

Securing Marine Bio-Resources as National Assets

International conventions and agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing (ABS) stress the importance of securing bio-resources as national assets. At MABIK, we are committed to securing and protecting our national rights to marine bio-resources found in the territorial waters of Korea. We will also provide the general public with high-quality, high value-added marine bio-resources as well as their information.

Process of securing marine living resources as national assets

  • 01
    Marine Bio-Resources
    • Collect genetic samples
    • Acquire traditional knowledge
    • Perform research in taxonomy and molecular biology
    • Collect specimens for research and exhibitions
  • 02
    Development of Specimen Databases
    • Analyze DNA barcodes
    • Build a database of collected specimens
    • Build a database of traditional knowledge
    • Establish an information system on marine life specimens
  • 03
    INVENTORY Development
    • Integrate bio-resource information networks
    • Create inventories conforming to international standards
    • Enter information with scientific, economic and medical benefits
  • 04
Data Submission & Claiming Rights to Marine Bio-Resources
    • Present scientific basis
    • Secure sovereign rights to marine bio-resources
    • Perform research on bio-resources in the high seas
    • Submit evidentiary materials to international organizations and claim the rights
