MABIK

80% of the Earth’s organisms inhabit the seas and oceans, we only know 1% of them. MABIK is conducting research to learn more about the other 99%.

01. Advancing Marine Life Acquisition and Management to Contribute to Marine Biodiversity Conservation

Advancement of the marine biodiversity survey system at home and abroad

  • Strategically acquire domestic marine biological resources by distinguishing habitats, species, and genetic diversity
  • Conduct joint marine biodiversity surveys and collaborative research with the state and other organizations
  • Secure new resources by conducting phylogenetic classification and donation/transfer of unidentified and misidentified resources (bulk donated resources, bulk samples, etc.) on a wider scale

Systematic storage and conservation of national marine life resources using digital technology

  • Strengthen the unique function of preserving national marine biological resources
  • Build the capacity for policy-linked national marine life management

Conservation of marine biodiversity for sustainable utilization

  • Discover new blue carbon based on marine organisms and practice conservation and management
  • Support the establishment of a marine species restoration center and blue carbon testbed center

02. Acquiring New Growth Engines for the Marine Bioindustry and Strengthening Support Systems

Provision of customized services through Marine Biobank and promotion of its operation

  • Expand the library by registering marine bio source materials and analyze their whitening, wrinkle improvement, and antibacterial efficacies
  • Improve the quality of materials for sale by analyzing other efficacies of the source materials and establish a metabolic disease bank (hypertension, diabetes, obesity) (2025)
  • Sell materials tailored to customer needs by discovering materials with high industrial utility
  • Upgrade the operation of Marine Biobank by providing consulting on the evaluation of competence, service quality, and reliability for certification under the Biological Resource Certification System (ISO 20387)

Development and commercialization of useful marine bio materials

  • Develop useful functional marine bio materials derived from marine organisms (health, functional cosmetics, functional food, functional nanomaterials)
  • Develop mass culture, formulation technology, indicator component setting, production process technology for commercialization of useful marine bio materials

Development of marine bio technology and full-fledged establishment of a marine bio ecosystem

  • Pursue joint research with enterprises and technology transfers by producing high-purity extracts derived from marine organisms and performing stability analysis, efficacy mechanism analysis, efficacy verification, and stability assessments
  • Establish a comprehensive service system to promote the marine bio industry by actively utilizing our excellent materials and technological know-how

03. Establishing a Global Digital Platform for Marine Life Resources

Services of Seaqurium leaping forward with new media

※ Seaqurium: Sea + Question + Rium

  • International exchange exhibition: An international exhibition for a glimpse into deep-sea marine life and special educational programs (Jun. 2024 – Feb. 2025)
  • Convergence platform: Establishment and operation of a customized exhibition, education, and research platform for visitors and experts
  • Content: Development of new educational content, operation of mobile exhibitions and education programs, provision of customized human resources training and on-site education, etc. to provide more support for marine science education and promote marine science literacy
  • International marine science competition: Fostering future talents in marine science by holding marine science competitions for youth from Korea and around the world and designating the West Coast-based marine science education center

Reorganization of user-friendly information systems to be used worldwide

  • Provide MBRIS services in English (OBIS, ABS, and species approved for overseas export)
  • Hold OBIS steering group meetings for national nodes and the secretariat and share global and interdepartmental biodiversity information and update information in accordance with the GBIF and national biodiversity strategies

Support for the global framework of standards on the ocean

  • BBNJ, CBD DSI: Hold MABIK International Convention Policy Council meetings
  • SOI: Hold the SOI Global Dialogue
  • Hold joint workshops with the International Seabed Authority and establish bilateral and multilateral partnerships with advanced institutions and international organizations in countries with high biodiversity
